There are about 2.8 million students in Germany in total and 137,700 German students abroad in 2018.
The favourite countries are: Austria, then the Netherlands, Great Britain and Switzerland. Some people also spend their semester abroad in North America.

There are many foreign students who spend a semester abroad in Germany: Every year, around 58,000 foreign students spend part of their studies at a German university. The top nations are Turkey and China. Then India, Russia, Italy and Austria follow at a greater distance.

There are different motivations: scientific further development, foreign language knowledge extend, other cultures get to know, network extend, courses of studies without the annoying German Numerus Clausus.

There are universities that have developed exchange programmes with foreign partner universities. If you want to spend a semester abroad, it is best to contact the International Office of the respective university. Official exchange programmes, such as the ERASMUS programme, also offer the possibility of organising a semester abroad.
