Care Concept Austria Scholarship - Sara Alessandras 1st report: Arrival in Salzburg

On the way to Austria

Sara AlessandraHello, I'm Sara Alessandra Scheibel and I won the "Welcome to Austria" scholarship for the winter semester 2021/2022 and I wanted to tell you about my first weeks as a student abroad in Salzburg.

My way to Austria was already very exciting. I drove my car from Bremen to Salzburg and spent a weekend in Stuttgart on the way. I live in a shared apartment in the "Salzburger Lehrerhaus" which is a dormitory where many musicians and future teachers live.

First impression of Salzburg

I had two weeks after my arrival to find my way around Austria and to arrive. Looking back, I think this time was necessary. During this time, I first had to get used to the mountains, or as the Austrians call them "hills" (because they are not that " high"), since Bremen is already very level. I explored the city and tried to use the time as good as possible until the university starts. During that time I went hiking a lot and the weather was even so good that I could go swimming in the beautiful Fuschlsee.

At the university

HörsaalUniversity started two weeks ago and because of my degree program (inclusive education and math) I have to study at two institutions. For inclusive pedagogy I study at the Pädagogische Hochschule Salzburg and for mathematics at the Paris Lodron University Salzburg. It was an incredibly weird feeling after almost 1.5 years to sit in a room with other students again and interact together. So I was able to make contacts there, because I didn't know anyone there and everything was unfamiliar. I have since met some very lovely people who have made it easier for me to get started.

The Corona measures are different depending on the institution. For example, at one university I have to show a test, vaccination certificate or proof of recovery as well as an ID card in order to enter and at the seminars. At the university, after showing the 3G proof, you get a ribbon, which must be shown at the seminar and is required for repeated entry on the same day into the university. However, both institutions require FFP2 masks, which has become a normality for me. The FFP2 mask may only be taken off at the place. What I find positive is that they try to offer all seminars in presence as much as possible. Since then, I realize once again how valuable face-to-face instruction is and I hope that this can continue to be offered in the framework.

Free time

Sara AlessandraOn the weekends I try to experience a lot and see a lot of Salzburg and the beautiful surroundings. For example, you should definitely go and see an ice hockey game in Salzburg! I am totally fascinated by it and have already been to three games there. Within Salzburg you can walk around wonderfully, but as soon as you want to experience something outside of Salzburg, a car is a great advantage. So I was able to experience a lot in a short time and I am looking forward to more beautiful moments in Salzburg and the surrounding area.

I am really looking forward to taking you along in my everyday life as a student abroad, see you next month!
