I'm very lucky - I found a room in a student residence! And that's a very special one - it's in a former dental clinic which was converted into a dormitory a few years ago. Now there are 470 students living here, each with 12-20 people in one corridor. I live with 16 Dutch people in one corridor. We share the bathroom and the kitchen. I feel more than comfortable in a place where many people think of confinement and constant noise. Of course, living together can sometimes be a bit difficult (who is responsible for the shopping trolley filled with dirty dishes?), but it can also be very entertaining and nice. In the evening we often watch films together on the big screen, go shopping together and if someone has a bad day, there might be flowers on that someones table the next day as a little cheer-up. In the evening we get together in the kitchen and cook.
Of course we also had to establish rules and contact restrictions on our hallway and living together with so many people carries a higher risk. On the other hand it helps me to have these contacts in these unusual times. And whether it is the weekly breakfast or learning together, it gives me the feeling of having arrived. Another advantage is that I so often come across the curiosities of the Dutch language and culture by chance: Did you know that the Dutch word for "mushroom" is "paddenstoeltje", which translates to "toad chair"?
Apart from that, I am happy about the Christmas lights all over the city and the empty streets. Because the positive thing about the lockdown is, that the city breathes a sigh of relief. There are almost only locals on the streets, it is an unusual, almost unique picture to see the otherwise so touristy city so empty. To all those who would like to visit this beautiful city at another time, I can only recommend the Noordermarkt! At the weekly market, which takes place every Saturday, farmers sell their fresh and regional products, there are second-hand clothes, antiques and many culinary specialities!
