I adjusted well to the new city during my first month here and already feel at home. Even though things are rather unusual due to corona restrictions and the city seems to be a little upside down, there is still enough to explore. Preferably through walking, the New Yorker way.
Because New York City was hit hard in the beginning of the pandemic, you will not see anyone without a mask in most parts of the city. Once you have seen what this virus can do with your own eyes, you treat rules like wearing a mask and social distancing differently. How effective it is when everyone adheres to these rules, is reflected in the numbers. Regarding infection risk, New York became one of the safest places in the USA. A lot of things are back to normal already and something positive also came with the restrictions and precautions: Most restaurants in New York City have outdoor seating now. That’s considered normal in most European cities during the summer months, but was not common here until recently.
In the meantime I also got to meet some of my new lab colleagues and really look forward to the time we will spend together. One thing is certain, I will learn a lot and will work alongside incredible scientists. I already miss my old colleagues, but fortunately they are not too far away and we can always visit each other.
Not so with my family and friends back in Austria. It’s a strange feeling, not knowing when the next time will be when they visit or when I can go visit them in Austria myself. I really hope it will not take too long until that’s possible again. The next few months will show in which direction the USA will go.
The presidential elections in November will play a big part in it. Not only in terms of the pandemic, but also other areas that I mentioned in previous reports. I am eager to see what the future will bring and I try to be as optimistic as possible.
