Health insurance for the semester abroadA semester abroad is certainly the most popular way for German students to spend part of their studies abroad. Not only does it give you the opportunity to learn new languages and cultures, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn more about the world of work. During a semester abroad, you will experience life as a student in another country up close and personal: from setting up lectures and catering in the refectory to nightlife in the bars and clubs.
In many courses of study, especially in linguistics and regional sciences, a semester abroad is an integral part of the course of study. But also in subjects such as teaching, medicine, business administration or computer science you can usually spend a semester abroad. Even in subjects that focus very much on Germany - such as law - a semester abroad can be worthwhile to get to know the legal systems of other countries. However, you have to make sure that you are able to recognise achievements abroad in Germany, and if so, which ones.
There are different motivations: further scientific development improving foreign language skills, getting to know other cultures courses of study without the annoying German numerus clausus..
Speaking of recognition: Before your semester abroad, you should inform yourself well whether the lectures you attend abroad and the examinations you take will also be recognised in Germany. The best way to do this is to select modules at your chosen university that are similar to those in Germany. The International Office or the Student Advisory Service can also help you. The conversion and recognition of credits is easier within Europe than outside, because within Europe there is ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System. This system helps with the recognition and conversion of credits from abroad.
Depending on their size, the universities in Germany usually have a large number of partner universities in other European and non-European countries. If you are looking for a suitable university abroad, it is definitely worth taking a look at the partner universities of your German university. There are often agreements between the partners which, for example, stipulate that tuition fees are not to be paid for the semester abroad. Often there is also experience or even support in organising your semester abroad at a partner university. The best thing to do is to talk to the team at your International Office.
The EASMUS programme or ERASMUS+ (link: https://www.erasmusplus.de/) has been promoting exchanges between universities in Europe for more than thirty years. If you apply and are accepted for a semester abroad within Europe within the framework of the ERASMUS programme, you will have some advantages:
In addition to ERASMUS, there are a number of other funding opportunities for the semester abroad that can also be used outside Europe. If you already receive BaföG in Germany, you will usually also receive Auslands-BaföG. Even if you are not entitled to BaföG in Germany, you can still try to apply for a foreign BaföG, because the limits abroad are often higher due to the higher cost of living. As a German student you can also take part in the competition for a Care Concept World Scholarship. As a scholarship holder, you will receive a monthly grant of 300 euros as well as appropriate health insurance.
There are universities that have developed exchange programmes with foreign partner universities. If you want to spend a semester abroad, it is best to contact the International Office of the respective university. Official exchange programmes, such as the ERASMUS-programme, also offer the possibility of organising a semester abroad.
Health insurance for the semester abroad You definitely need health insurance for your semester abroad. The German statutory health insurance funds only reimburse treatment costs within the EU at the level that would have been incurred in Germany. Outside the EU, no costs will be reimbursed. Also a return transport to Germany is not covered - neither from the EU nor from abroad. It is therefore worth taking out an additional international health insurance policy that covers treatment costs and return transport. We have developed our Care College product especially for students. For semesters abroad in the USA we offer you our special product Care College USA.
