A health insurance protects you from high costs if you get ill or have an accident during your time as an au-pair abroad. In many countries the treatment costs are much higher than in Germany. Therefore a good au-pair health insurance is absolutely necessary, in many countries even compulsory.
We have compiled the most important information about the international health insurance for au-pairs for you here.
As an au-pair within the EU
Most au-pairs choose Great Britain or Spain as their host country, i.e. countries within the EU.
The German statutory health insurance also covers treatment in EU countries. However, as a rule they only pay the costs that would have been incurred for treatment in Germany. Costs exceeding this amount will be paid by you or your parents.
If something happens to you and you have to be transported back to Germany, the statutory health insurance does not pay for this. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you take out an additional au pair health insurance abroad, e.g. our product Care Au-Pair.
As an au-pair in non-EU countriesAttention:In almost all countries outside the EU, the German statutory health insurance funds do not cover either the local treatment or the return transport. Since this can quickly become very expensive, a good au-pair health insurance should be included in your luggage!
Special case as an au-pair in the USA
If you would like to go to the USA as an au-pair, very special regulations apply. First of all you need a health insurance to get the J1 visa. In addition, the treatment costs in the USA are considerably higher than in Germany.

Think about the liability insurance for au-pairs
