Now I'm getting to the point where I have to write my master thesis. As we all know, it is not easy to find the right topic for a master thesis, because since I will spend the next 6 months of my time on it, the topic should be interesting for me and I also need to have a certain basic knowledge about the topic. For the reasons mentioned above and in addition to the fact that I also worked in a refugee aid project during my internship, I decided to write my master thesis about the impact of social media on the integration process by implementing selected digital media based strategies for the socio-cultural adaptation of Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees in Germany.
Social integration is the process by which newcomers or minorities are integrated into the social structure of the host society. Social integration, together with economic integration and identity integration, are three main dimensions of the experience of a newcomer in the host society. A higher level of social integration contributes to a smaller social distance between groups and to more uniform values and practices. Bringing together different ethnic groups regardless of language, caste, faith, etc., without losing their own identity. It allows access to all areas of community life and removes segregation.
After moving to Germany in 2015, I have come so far to witness how the integration process here in Germany is declining. This is not because the people in Germany are not hospitable, nor is it because the newcomers do not want to integrate. There is a visible gap between the newcomer and the host country in this respect. In addition, being black and being a refugee is a completely different level. Therefore, I wanted to focus on the impact of social media on the integration process and socio-cultural adaptation, especially for the Ethiopian and Eritrean refugees. Parallel to my master thesis I will conduct a practical project that will put the theoretical part of the work into practice. In cooperation with the Moses and Ubuntu House project, which involves all parties in the integration process and enables them to participate in the implementation of a selected digital media-based project.
