The higher education system in Austria

Austria’s higher education system is made up of four different educational institutions:

• 22 public universities
• 16 private universities
• 21 universities of applied sciences
• 14 teacher training colleges

Courses of study are divided into the winter semester (October 1 to January 31) and the summer semester (March 1 to June 30). The degree programs have been converted to Bachelor and Master degree programs with the exceptions of medical and dental degree programs.

Public universities

Public universities in Austria are divided into general, technical, medical and art institutions. The majority of the degree programs offered are rather theoretically oriented. If you prefer a more practical course of study, you should have a look at the various universities of applied sciences in the country.

Universities of applied sciences

Universities of applied sciences offer a practical and career-oriented education. This is reflected in particular in the fact that in most study programs various internships must be completed, and, in some cases, admission procedures must first be passed. The full and part-time fields of study at the universities of applied sciences are divided into the areas of business, engineering and IT, media, health sciences and cultural studies, among others.
