I would like to tell you about two cultural experiences of the last weeks: my visit to the opera in Linz and my trip to Graz. I am always happy when I attend concerts of my musical friends. And I am grateful that I had these two opportunities.
With my Erasmus group I attended a performance of Händel's Rinaldo at Musiktheater Linz. Our colleague sings a role in Rinaldo and we wanted to see, hear and support her there. I have never visited this building before and I was surprised to find that the Musiktheater Linz is a great and interesting piece of modern architecture. The stage design in the opera piece was also modern, contrasting with the historical baroque music. I thought about whether the stage design might have been directly inspired by the architecture of the building.
The story about the war between the Christians and Saracens was full of magic and unexpected twists, and sometimes we weren't sure we understood all the scenes. During the intermission we discussed a lot about what had happened in the story. The reason was that the singers sang Italian and there were Italian or German subtitles. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the beautiful music of the melodic and emotional arias. After the performance, we all met with the colleague and talked a bit about the performance. She told us that she was not only very happy that we came, but also very nervous to sing in front of us. However, she sang very well and we clapped her a lot at the end of the performance.
Last weekend I went to Graz to attend a concert of the singing and harpsichord classes. My visit was also supposed to be a surprise for a friend of mine who was playing in the concert. I took the train over beautiful alps. There was a lot of snow everywhere on this part of the route. I was very happy about that, because I love snow since my childhood.
But in Graz there was completely different weather: sunny, a bit warmer, almost like spring. And the city is beautiful. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time to walk around the whole city, but at least I saw the city hall and the cathedral. The narrow streets are picturesque, with various stores in historic houses. The concert took place in a colorfully decorated hall of Kunstuniversität Graz (KUG) with a special, mysterious atmosphere. The singers sang Italian arias by composers like A. Scarlatti or G. F. Händel with the accompaniment of the harpsichord students. Afterwards we all went to a café together and we celebrated a bit. I was very happy to have met a friend of mine from Thailand there, who now lives in Graz and studies at KUG. We found out that we are both interested in early music from Hungary and we had a lot of fun talking about it. But the best part was that he showed me manuscripts that I could not find anywhere. They were written by an old Slovak composer called Roskovsky. He was born in the same town as my grandfather and that's why I'm very interested in his life story and his work.
